A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
Stunning tale of magic!
I regret not picking this book up earlier. So when Air Awakens came knocking on the door and tell me to hop in, HOLY MOLLY! This is one kind of adventure!!
Here are the reasons why you should definitely have a copy of Air Awakens in your life:
1. VIVID WORLD-BUILDING — I absolutely adore the idea of this magical world. The world-building is simple to understand, but rich in details. Beside the ability to control their primary powers: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire, the sorcerers can possess various other skills that share the similar roots to their elements. Not only that, I love how the historical facts and records were revealed in the book, which give us a closer peek to Elise Kova’s world.
“Two sorcerers can give birth to a Common. Two Commons can give birth to a sorcerer. Magic chooses us.”
2. CHARACTERS — Vhalla, our protagonist, is a library apprentice. She is a quiet girl, those kind of people who content with their lives and would love to keep it that way. But hey, that makes Vhalla’s development surprisingly spectacular. As a book lover myself, I found it amazingly easy to connect with Vhalla’s passion for books, and how she changed from just want-to-read to want-to-experience (all thanks to our guy Aldrik here, who definitely has a thing for black clothes). The two protagonists are made for each other perfectly; he’s experience and can drop the “cold mask” like a pro, while she’s kind and intelligent, but fierce at the same time.
“I want a place you hardly dare to even whisper. I want the bravery to not only read, but to do. I want a man, not a library boy. A man who is tall and witty and knows more about the world than you would ever dare dream.”
3. PROMISING ACTION-PACKED — While the 1st half of the book is more building characters and facts, the last half is packed with fast-paced, gripping actions from one scene to another. Not only that, the ending hinted for a new Vhalla who can read books and kick ass at the same time. I cannot wait for the more future “dates” with the rest of the Air Awakens series.
“They wanted to kill her, so this Vhalla would die, she resolved, and a new Vhalla would be born from her ashes.”
OVERALL — I’m in love with this book. The cover is absolutely mesmerizing. All characters in this book, from the royal family to the servants, all their own very distinct and glowing characteristics. If I must summarize this review into 3 words, it would be: Read. It. Now.
Oh, and don’t forget Avatar: The Last Airbender. Totally an inspiration for more imagination…
“Fire needs sure to live. Sure field fire, strikes it, and makes it burn brighter and hotter than it are could alone. But too much air will sniff it completely, just as too many flames will consume all the air. They are far greater that the Sun of their parts together, but are equally as dangerous to each other’s existence.”
― Elise Kova,
Let’s Chat: If you have an ability to control an element, what would you choose? (And you are encouraged to think outside of the box 😀 )
Have a great bookish weekend!
